  • Barbara Probst’s Exposures hones in on the camera’s gaze rather than the photographer’s. By using multiple shots taken at the same time through a remote shutter release mechanism, her work emphasizes what the cameras can and cannot see. Here, Grand Central Station serves as the iconic backdrop, creating an alluring atmosphere akin to a fashion shoot, with the incandescent flash of the camera producing a stunning contrast within the close-up portraits but an almost unsettling atmosphere in the distant images. Together, these photographs highlight Probst’s unique practice in how she carefully prepares for the shots but is ultimately unable to plan the full moment due to its setting in a metropolitan hub.
