  • “The works attempt to render the body as a field and to feel the body not as a knowable object, but as a subjective space of becoming.”
    — Antony Gormley

Celebrated for his sculptures, installations, and public artworks that probe the relationship between the human body and space, Antony Gormley has cemented his position as Britain’s foremost sculptor in the global art scene. Gormley’s innovative and thought-provoking works seek to challenge conventional notions of space, time, and the individual’s place in society. Besides his exploration of the body in relation to its space, the artist also investigates a range of other themes such as the universal experiences of humanity, the passage of time, and the interplay between presence and absence through his creative practice.

In capturing the silhouette of a figure looking out towards an expansive seascape, Gormley investigates themes of human presence, vulnerability, and our connection to the natural world through Minefield I. The present work recalls Gormley’s iconic sculpture, ANOTHER TIME in Margate and invites viewers to contemplate the relationship between the human figure and the environment that it occupies. Overcome with a pervasive blackness, Mindfield I evokes a sense of longing and melancholic gravitas. As the tides ebb and flow, the figure becomes partially submerged, further emphasising the transient nature of the human form.
