  • “The object hovers between being architecture and being an image of architecture. The result for the viewer, in both drawings and installations is to be caught up in an indeterminacy of perspectival viewpoint.”
    — Anna Moszynska

Celebrated for his sculptures, installations, and public artworks that probe the relationship between the human body and space, Antony Gormley has cemented his position as Britain’s foremost sculptor in the global art scene. Gormley’s innovative and thought-provoking works seek to challenge conventional notions of space, time, and the individual’s place in society. Besides his exploration of the body in relation to its space, the artist also investigates a range of other themes such as the universal experiences of humanity, the passage of time, and the interplay between presence and absence through his creative practice.

Executed in 2010, the present work exists as a preliminary drawing of the artist’s large-scale installations from his seminal Breathing Room series. Constructed with interconnecting frames of architectural forms, Breathing Room XXIX captures the effect of the glowing halogen light as it illuminates in the gallery against the darkness of its surrounding space. Reflecting on his body of works, Gormley comments that it ‘prompts collective and individual proprioception. The works use time as its matrix as much as space… the interval between the meditative and the interrogative, the creation and questioning of illusion in time by light, makes this a ‘test site’ for experience.’ [i] The present work showcases a network of lines and the interconnecting space frames of Gormley’s installation. To achieve this result, the artist utilised a fine brush dipped in household bleach which erases the ink from its paper support, thus creating negative outlines that glow against its muted background. Examining the body’s interaction with the built environment, Untitled explores the potential of ‘mapping’ the human form with boldly physical structures.
