  • Catalogue Essay

This photograph offered here was acquired by Charles Haupt, the present owner, directly from Ansel Adams in 1971. This print replaced one that had been previously sent but damaged in shipping. In the accompanying letter, Adams writes, ’Herewith the new print of FROZEN LAKE AND CLIFFS, KAWEAH GAP, SIERRA NEVADA, CALIFORNIA. I think it is a much better print than the first one! I hope you will be pleased with it.’ Haupt and Adams shared a passion for photography and classical music. A virtuoso violinist, Haupt was concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra for 37 years, performed with the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center for 21 years, and is Director of A Musical Feast, a premier chamber music ensemble. An exhibition of Haupt’s black-and-white Polaroid work was shown at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center, Buffalo, in 1994.
