Bette Midler rose to fame in the 1970s after regularly performing at the Manhattan Continental Baths, a gay bathhouse at the Ansonia Hotel in New York City. Known for her bawdy performances in which she often assumed a persona named The Divine Miss M, she became an icon of the gay community. In 1979, Midler debuted on the big screen with a starring role as a Janis Joplin-like rock star in The Rose. The movie found critical acclaim and the title song, sung by Midler, earned her a second Grammy award. This image by Annie Leibovitz is from Midler’s cover shoot for Rolling Stone magazine (December 13, 1979), publicizing the release of the movie.
