\nExecuted circa 1974, Twisting Spike is a substantial example of Allen Bertoldi’s sculptural practice, comprising layers of laminated plywood that twist and taper upward to an apex over five feet tall. The work’s calculated geometry and sinuous progression transform the inherent rigidity of plywood into a remarkably dynamic form, balancing structure with an impression of movement. The simple, repeated geometric forms and use of industrially fabricated materials reflect Bertoldi’s engagement with the formal concerns of Minimalism, while the sculpture’s twisting form introduces a distinctly organic and kinetic quality.

The sculpture was gifted by Bertoldi to Harvey Jones, longtime Senior Curator at the Oakland Museum of California, and subsequently passed by Jones to the present owner. This distinguished provenance places the work within Bertoldi’s California milieu at a pivotal moment in his career, just as his work was gaining wider national recognition. Bertoldi’s sculpture is today represented in the collection of the Nassau County Museum of Art, which holds five works from his 1979 one-person exhibition, the first major exhibition of the artist’s work in New York.
