  • Catalogue Essay

Adam McEwen’s Untitled was painted as part of a series of Atomkraft works based on the ‘Smiling Sun’, the international symbol of the anti-nuclear movement. Over 36 million items displaying the 'Smiling Sun' logo were sold and the statement 'Nuclear Power? No Thanks' was translated into 45 languages making it a ubiquitous icon of the 1970s and 80s. McEwen used the motif to create unique works in varying shades of grey, the larger of which were exhibited at The National Exemplar Gallery in 2013 alongside the lyrics of Nena’s Cold War era protest song 99 Luftballons.
