  • A unique opportunity for the winning bidder and three guests to enjoy a private artist-led tour of Whitechapel Gallery’s upcoming solo exhibition of Sonia Boyce DBE RA, followed by a lunch with Boyce and Gallery Director, Gilane Tawadros at the Gallery’s acclaimed restaurant, Townsend.

Boyce’s Autumn 2024 exhibition is conceived in dialogue with a major exhibition of Brazilian artist Lygia Clark (1920–1988) showing at the same time. Boyce was introduced to Clark’s work in the late 1980s. She quickly became fascinated by the Brazilian artist’s pioneering experiential and participatory practice and inspired to adopt an approach that similarly harnessed interaction, exchange, and improvisation. The exhibition will present a series of works that exemplify the importance – and influence - of Clark on Boyce’s own practice.

The exclusive tour and lunch will offer a rare chance to gain insights into the ideas and methodology behind the works on view, directly from Boyce, as well as learn more about the history and future of the Gallery from its current Director.

Sonia Boyce DBE RA is an interdisciplinary artist and academic whose work spans film, drawing, photography, print, sound, and installation. Boyce came to prominence in the early 1980s through the burgeoning British Black Arts Movement with works that addressed issues of race and gender in Britain. Since the 1990s, Boyce’s focus shifted to embrace a social practice that invites improvisation, collaboration, movement, and sound, and explores questions of artistic authorship and cultural difference. In 2022, she represented Britain at 59th Venice Biennale with the award-winning presentation Feeling Her Way.

Townsend restaurant is located within the historic Whitechapel Gallery building. Offering an evolving wine and food menu of creatively constructed seasonal dishes showcasing high-quality British produce, in January 2021, Townsend was awarded a Michelin plate.

Terms and conditions: The winning bidder is entitled to bring three guests to both the tour and the lunch, which includes a three-course meal and wine. The meal is redeemable between October 2024 and January 2025 to coincide with Sonia Boyce’s exhibition at Whitechapel Gallery and arranged at a mutually convenient time for all parties.
