Kehinde Wiley - Tongue + Chic Sneakers x Artists New York Monday, July 16, 2018 | Phillips
  • Description

In 2010, the FIFA World Cup was held across Africa and in honor of the event, Puma commissioned American artist Kehinde Wiley renowned for his compellingly heroic paintings often featuring images of young Black men. For the World Cup, Puma asked Wiley to create portraits of three African soccer stars and to collaborate on a Puma line of clothing and shoes. The theme of African unity permeated the collaboration and was reflected in his use of a range of African-inspired textile patterns. One of the creations was this limited-edition soccer cleat which pairs peacocks in full display with the robust Puma feline.
