As we celebrate Phillips’ 230th anniversary, it is an opportunity to pause and reflect on how extraordinary and unexpected the journey from 1796 to now has been. The story of Phillips unfolds alongside revolutions, inventions, artistic movements, royal courts, and sweeping global change. It began with a 30-year-old entrepreneur who set out on his own with no staff, no permanent premises, and guided by the same innovative spirit that continues to shape Phillips today.

\n\n

Phillips was founded in 1796 in Westminster, London, by Harry Phillips, a former senior clerk at a well-established London auction house, who set out to found his own business. In his first year, Phillips conducted 12 auctions in 12 distinct locations, walking across London to whichever venue he could secure, with catalogues bound in marbled paper at Seven Dials. He soon gained a reputation as an innovator who combined business acumen with a flair for showmanship, introducing opulent evening receptions ahead of auctions.

\n\n

Harry Phillips gained international recognition for handling prestigious sales, including those of Marie Antoinette’s art collection in 1798, Queen Caroline’s belongings in 1822, as well as household items belonging to Napoleon following his death on St. Helena. Phillips remains the only auction house ever to have held a sale inside Buckingham Palace, in 1836.

Lots 301 to 307 have been assembled over several decades by a private collector with a deep fascination for Ludwig II of Bavaria, reflecting an enduring admiration for the king.

Weighing 12.31 and 12.69 carats respectively, and accompanied by an AGL report, these Ceylon sapphires are simply charming, accented as they are by almost floral settings of marquise-shaped and brilliant-cut diamonds. And we always know exactly what we’re seeing, as the charm of these designs can only be described with four words, two names: Van Cleef & Arpels.

But even when stepping outside these most identifiable design hallmarks, there remains a charming effervescence that bubbles up even in their most avant-garde creations. Take the ‘Zip’ necklace, first created in 1950, which remains one of the house’s most groundbreaking designs. It demonstrates a core tenet of the maison’s personality — that as seriously as Van Cleef & Arpels takes their craft, they’ve never shied away from having a bit of fun.

Inspired by the growing presence of zippers in haute couture during the late 1930s, the idea was first developed under the direction of Renée Puissant, daughter of Estelle Arpels and Alfred Van Cleef. Adding to the design’s allure, it is widely believed to have first been suggested by Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor, a style icon and important patron of fine jewellery.

Seamlessly merging high jewellery with mechanical ingenuity, it transforms an everyday object into a work of exceptional artistry. Both visually striking and technically complex, the piece quickly established itself as an enduring icon of the maison.

If the house’s ‘Alhambra’ is a single lucky leaf, ‘Les Jardins’ is the grounds of the entire sprawling estate. First launched in 2006 to celebrate Van Cleef & Arpels’ centenary, the ‘Les Jardins’ collection showcases the maison’s penchant for whimsy and beauty in equal measure. And this 2010 example is particularly enchanting. The line of sapphires delicately transitions into purple, serving as a home for the citrus-hued garnets, which are accented with diamond leaves that catch the light like the golden-hour sun.

A house as creative as Van Cleef & Arpels understands that sometimes, poetry is the art of deletion. So it was in the early 1930s that they set out to develop a method for setting gemstones into hidden grooves, resulting in completely flush settings without visible prongs. The mystery setting was born, and with it, a platform for design ingenuity that the house still explores today.

Take this pair of ruby and diamond earrings, which strike the eye like a delectable pair of berries hanging from the ears. These drop-shaped pendants are mystery-set with calibré-cut rubies, topped with diamond hulls and suspended from floral-designed surmounts, each accented with larger circular-cut rubies. They pair perfectly with the matching domed ring, also mystery-set with calibré-cut rubies in a honeycomb pattern. What is a Priority Bid?

\n\n

Priority Bids are written, binding bids that must be placed no less than 48 hours in advance of an auction’s start time. The bid must be equal to or greater than the lot’s published low estimate and placed using Phillips’ absentee bid forms.

\n\n

Bidders who have placed Priority Bids ahead of the auction, if they are the winning bidder and satisfy the other conditions of Priority Bidding, will benefit from a Buyer’s Premium rate which is significantly lower than the Buyer’s Premium rate otherwise. This benefit applies whether their winning bid is at the amount of their early Priority Bid or a higher bid placed subsequently by them bidding live in the auction.

\n\n

The new Buyer’s Premium structure featuring Priority Bidding rates is effective from 1 September 2025 and applies to all live auctions in the Fall 2025 season and for all categories, excluding Watches.

\n\n

Watch auctions (both live and timed online auctions) will continue using the same Buyer’s Premium rates that applied in the spring 2025 sale season and will not be eligible for Priority Bidding. Details of these rates can be found here.

\n\n

Timed online-only auctions will be subject to the new standard Buyer’s Premium rates and are not currently eligible for Priority Bidding. You can find details of these rates here.

\n\n

How do I place a Priority Bid?

\n\n

To be eligible for a lower Buyer’s Premium through the scheme, you must leave a written bid at least 48 hours before the auction. The bid must be a written absentee bid.

\n\n

Submitting Priority Bids is simple:

\n\n

• Complete Phillips’ Absentee Bid Form with details of the Absentee Bid(s) you want to submit. You can download and complete the Bid Form here.

\n\n

• Ensure your written absentee Bids are at or above the published low estimate of the Lots you are bidding on.

\n\n

• Sign and send the form to Phillips’ Bids Department in the auction location before the 48-hour pre-auction cut-off. Forms can be emailed using the contact details found below.

\n\n

Please note that Priority Bids cannot be cancelled.
