In the past decade, the popularity of pink diamonds has soared phenomenally. Whether it is a pink colour with a tint of purple or orange, this alluring feminine hue makes it an increasingly sought-after choice for engagement rings. The prices that exceptional pink diamonds command at international auctions are at record high.
Scientists cannot explain precisely why the pink hue is imbued in diamonds, except for a defect in its lattice structure. The enigmatic charm only made pink diamonds more desirable among connoisseurs, even more so when the Argyle Mine in western Australia announced its closure in end of 2020. Prior to its depletion, the mine has been yielding over 90% of the world’s pink diamonds. Less than 0.01% of their entire annual production were graded ‘fancy pink’ diamonds, which amounted to approximately 50 to 60 diamonds, mostly below 0.50 carat. Now that there is no discovery of new mines, or any comparable ones in existence, it is only logical that the prices of pink diamonds continue to increase.
Fancy pink diamonds of over 2 carats are highly collectible, and a specimen like this one which weighs more than 5 carats is the ultimate dream of any collector. With a touch of orange that adds warmth to this gem, this substantial coloured diamond is a true wonder of nature.
