This elegant jewels collection will be offered in this Jewels and Jadeite: Hong Kong Auction on 27 November 2022, at 3 pm.

\n\n

From snow-capped mountains, and roaring winds to the thunder of waves, the forces of nature unleash their awe-inspiring power and majestic beauty. Deep within the earth’s surface lies a geological phenomenon, smaller in scale but of equal dazzling magnitude. Quite literally, diamonds in the rough. Formed over billions of years by fiery heat and pressure causing carbon to crystallize, the stones are excavated, carved, and categorized by colour, carat, cut, and clarity, all in the search for perfection. Such a perfect diamond could be characterized by a 26.12 carat D-flawless (Type IIa) diamond so chemically pure, so rare, that it accounts for fewer than 2% of natural diamonds.

\n\n

\n\n

Lot 602, An Impressive D-Flawless (Type IIa) Diamond of 26.12 Carats
\nEstimate HK$ 18,000,000-24,000,000 / US$ 2,300,000-3,000,000
\nJewels and Jadeite, 27 November

\n\n

Renowned for their own beauty and splendor, precious gemstones like rubies and sapphires are forged from minerals within the earth, flaunting Mother Nature’s technicolor palette in rich saturated tones of red and blue. Like fire and ice, the seductive energy of oval and cushion-shaped Burmese rubies and diamonds emanates from a sensational necklace, bracelet, and pair of ear pendants that glisten across the skin. Meanwhile, a Burmese ruby and diamond necklace features 19.39 carats of showstopping sapphire accents, proving that when it comes to jewels, elegance is elemental.

Meet today’s precious power couple: emeralds and sapphires. Ever since Cleopatra smothered herself with emeralds, and centuries later, fashion-influencer Josephine de Beauharnais chose a sapphire for the toi-et-moi ring to seal her engagement to Napoleon, these two noble colored gems have been expressions of power, rank and status, coveted and flaunted for centuries by women of substance, style and stature.

For Cleopatra, emeralds, mined in Egypt, were sacred, representing not only the natural world, fertility and rebirth, but also the supremacy of her realm, and, we have to assume, her seductive sensuality. It’s not surprising then, that while filming Cleopatra in Rome in 1962, Richard Burton lavished Elizabeth Taylor with suites of Bulgari emeralds, including a sublime emerald and diamond brooch as an engagement gift. They sealed their love over sumptuous jewels in a private room in Bulgari’s via Condotti store, accessed by a secret side entrance.

The wild, intoxicating and fiery beauty of the emerald mesmerized Renaissance royalty and nobility, when the lusted-after ‘green stones’ made their way on Spanish galleons to Europe from the New World. And they became the badges of great female power-brokers for centuries to come: Catherine the Great’s magnificent Colombian emerald and diamond brooch proclaimed her unrivalled might and majesty, echoed later by the Grand Duchess Vladimir’s dramatic emerald and diamond necklace with a 100 carat hexagonal center stone. Smuggled out of Russia, post Revolution, her emeralds found their way to Cartier, Paris, where they were purchased in 1947 by the Woolworth heiress, Barbara Hutton. She had them set on a tiara that she loved to wear, with her signature sari, in her villa in Tangiers, Morocco.

\n\n

The Cambridge emeralds are amongst the most famous gems in the British royal collection. The luscious cabochon Colombian emeralds were won in a state lottery in Frankfurt around 1820 by Princess Augusta of Hesse, Duchess of Cambridge, grandmother of the jewel-adoring Queen Mary. The emeralds ended up in the hands of Queen Mary’s brother, Prince Francis of Teck, a reckless gambler, who left them, on his untimely death to his mistress. His sister, soon to become Queen Mary, consort to George V, lost no time in negotiating with his mistress, securing the emeralds for herself and the Crown. She wore some in a suite made by Garrard to the Delhi Durbar in 1911, others became alternative drops for the Vladimir circle tiara while others still were conjured into a 1920s choker famously worn by Diana, Princess of Wales, when she danced with her husband on a visit to Australia in 1984.

The emerald was the gemstone of choice for the great American socialites, including Mrs. John D Rockefeller, Eva Stotesbury, and Wallis Simpson, later Duchess of Windsor, who chose a colossal emerald for her engagement ring in 1936. Meanwhile the emerald’s wayward glamour made it irresistible to Hollywood royalty: Marlene Dietrich wore her two sensational cabochon emerald bracelets, stacked together, both on and off screen, one by Traebert & Hoeffer-Mauboussin, the other by Paul Flato. Merle Oberon’s necklace, made by Cartier in 1938, dripping with cabochon emerald drops, remains one of the most evocative Hollywood jewels.

Sapphires, on the other hand, while just as noble, just as lusted after, tend to exude a cooler, more courtly and cerebral glamour – more secretive than seductive in their velvety depths. The color of heaven, meditation, devotion and contemplation, sapphires have meandered through history hand-in-hand with emeralds, their stories intermingled, sharing many of the same characters, especially when it comes to royalty: Catherine the Great, Queen Victoria, Grand Duchess Vladimir, the late Queen Elizabeth II, a long list of sapphire-loving luminaries that begins with Helen of Troy, said to own a mesmerising star sapphire, representing her supreme heaven-sent beauty.

The grandest of sapphire parures were worn at court, especially in France. Both the gem-obsessed Empress Josephine and her adopted daughter, Stephanie de Beauharnais owned ravishing sapphire suites, as did Queen Marie-Amelie, who even pinned great sapphire ornaments down the length of her skirts; The necklace of one of her parures, now in the Louvre, said to have belonged to her ill-fated aunt, Marie-Antoinette.

\n\n

In Great Britain, sapphire has long reigned as the nation’s favorite gemstone, perhaps influenced by Queen Victoria. On the eve of her wedding, Prince Albert (fond of designing jewelry himself) presented her with a sapphire and diamond brooch, which she wore pinned to her wedding dress. The brooch was a favorite of the late Queen Elizabeth II, along with the sapphire suite given to her also as a wedding gift by her father, George VI. The tradition was crystallized when Lady Diana Spencer chose a sapphire and diamond cluster for her engagement ring, the ring now worn by Catherine, Princess of Wales. Diana was also given a massive sapphire and diamond brooch as a wedding gift by the late Queen Mother, Charles’ grandmother. She turned it into the centrepiece of a deep pearl choker, the quintessential New Romantic accessory, and wore it, unforgettably, with her tight ruched black Revenge Dress to a party at the Serpentine Gallery, in 1994.

\n\n

One of the most sensational royal sapphires belonged to Queen Marie of Romania: a monumental, velvety cornflower blue Sri Lankan stone of 478.88 carats, mounted in 1919 by Cartier on a long diamond sautoir in Art Deco style, and purchased by King Ferdinand of Romania for his queen in 1921. It made the perfect accompaniment to her Russian sapphire-studded kokoshnik tiara, with its immense center stone, that had belonged to none other than the Grand Duchess Vladimir.

\n\n

Naturally, socialites also salivated over sapphires. Mrs Polly Logan (previously Mrs Guggenheim), a Washington D.C. mover and shaker, owned the 422.99 carat sapphire, now in the Smithsonian. Marjorie Merriweather Post draped herself in a stunning sapphire and diamond necklace, and the Bismarck sapphire, a rare Burma stone nearly 100 carats, set in a Cartier necklace of 1927, was a gift to the beautiful Mrs. Harrison Williams, later Mona Bismarck, from her besotted and enormously wealthy husband. When we reach the Art Deco years, it’s interesting to see that emerald and sapphire were set together for the first time, a radical, racy combination of intense colors influenced by the drama and sultriness of the Ballets Russes. It proved to be a marriage made in heaven.

Marriages and sapphires came together in Hollywood’s continuing love affair with gems and jewels: Mary Pickford’s Star of Bombay (a Sri Lankan stone) was given to her by her husband Douglas Fairbanks Sr., and Joan Crawford’s 72 carat emerald-cut stone was a gift from her husband, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Perhaps the final glimmer of starlight must go to Elizabeth Taylor, who moved effortlessly between her love of emeralds and sapphires. In 1972 to celebrate her 40th birthday, Richard Burton presented her with a Bulgari sautoir, in the glamorous jet -set style of the day, centred on a lustrous sugarloaf Burma ruby – one of the ravishing jewels I included in my book, The Impossible Collection – the 100 Most Important jewels of the 20^th century.

\n\n

Today’s crush on color, demonstrated by the Jewels & Jadeite sale, has more than a whiff of the storied female power-player about it. Moving beyond technical aspects of gemological classifications or categorizations, or shall we say adding to their gloss, is a growing fascination with emeralds and sapphires that resonate with social, cultural and historical richness, and most of all, with the scent of the powerful women of style who wore them.

Just to look at the ravishing rubies in Phillips’ Hong Kong sale is to feel the heart quicken, the pulse race and imagination skyrocket, splintering into a myriad of Red references, memories, and visions, of color and light. All color is emotive, and in a jewel or gem it’s the most powerful emotional trigger, the key that unlocks our responses, that lures us in or leaves us cold.

\n\n

\n\n

Lot 578, A Superb 4.95 carats Burmese Ruby and Diamond Ring
\nEstimate: HK$ 3,800,000 - 4,800,000 (US$ 490,000-620,000)

Perhaps, ruby red, the intense pulsatingly red of the sublime jewels in the sale, is more emotionally stirring, more intriguing, alluring and more contradictory than any other color in the gem world. It’s the color of high energy that gets the blood pumping, the color of vitality and the life force; the color of heat, seduction and flaming passion; the red heart emoji a universal modern-day signal or the red of roses that sends an age-old message of love and romance. Yet at the same time, it’s red that flashes with danger, a warning not to let that fiery passion go unbridled. So we decided to delve into the Meaning and Messages, and iconic symbols of the color red…

A Color with Many Meanings

\n\n

The Lady in Red: she’s the one oozing confidence, the extrovert, demanding attention, daring you to approach; Chris de Burgh says he’s never seen so many men asking her to dance.

\n\n

Red Lips: another sign of confidence, sensuality, strength and independence, once the symbol of women’s suffrage, and always and universally a signal of unforgettable, powerful femininity: Snow White, Paloma Picasso, Marilyn Monroe. And unforgettable images too, the Rolling Stones emblem, or Tom Wesselmann, Mouth #14 (Marilyn), 1967 proclaiming the opening of Phillips’ Los Angeles.

\n\n

\n\n

No shade of lipstick can compete with the power behind a pair of red lips as seen in Tom Wesselmann, Mouth #14 (Marilyn), 1967
\nLot 12, Tom Wesselmann, Mouth #14 (Marilyn), 1967. Sold for $3,236,500.
\n20th Century & Contemporary Art Evening Sale, New York, 15 November

\n\n

Red Ferrari: the ultimate classic sports car, a magnet for both men and women, and the national color of Italian racing cars. The color, too, of the shirts worn by Garibaldi and his soldiers. The color of red hot chili pepper, the ancient and enduring Italian amulet.

\n\n

Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers: the magic sparkling ruby red shoes worn by Dorothy Gale in the Wizard of Oz, her saviour, protection, her way home, the symbol of hope, triumph, and imagination. The Ruby slippers, created by Gilbert Adrian, have achieved cult status, the embodiment of Hollywood glamour, of dreams of stardom, magical and illuminating. A mismatched pair is in the Smithsonian Museum, Washington. D.C.

\n\n

The Red ‘Follow Me" Soles of Louboutin Shoes: utterly seductive, instantly recognizable, with more than a glint of danger, and a style that is elegant sophistication mingled with a provocative edge and attitude. More than anything, the red soles tell of luxury. There are stories about the genesis of the ruby red sole, inspired by Warhol, or by red nail vanish which Louboutin grabbed from a girl painting her nails and slathered it on a sole. Red, says Louboutin, is more than a color. “It is a symbol of love, of blood, of passion.”

\n\n

\n\n

\n\n

The Matador’s Red Cape: the muleta is pure theatre, tradition and high drama, as the bull is actually color blind and it is the waving, fluttering movement of the cape that provokes him to charge. The matador holds his sword under the cape which comes into play in the final stage of the bullfight.

\n\n

Red for Babies and Brides: in China, the color red augurs good luck and prosperity, and gifts of money for a newborn are given in a red envelope, while red eggs are part of the ritual celebration for a new baby. In Japan, a bride traditionally dresses in a red kimono, symbolizing happiness and good fortune. And in India too, brides dress in red.

\n\n

Red to Ward off Trouble: Since antiquity, the color red was believed to ward off evil spirits and even today, a red string bracelet is often worn for the same reason. Again, because red is the color of blood, the life force, good fortune and vitality.

\n\n

Lot 544, A Burmese Ruby, Sapphire and Diamond Necklace.
\nEstimate: HK$ 1,200,000 - 2,000,000 (US$ 150,000-250,000).
\nJewels & Jadeite, 27 November

\n\n

Perhaps we are drawn to red because of its evocative color, its deeper meaning, symbolism, or references to pop culture; but when it comes to jewels, it might be much simpler than that. As shown in the Jewels & Jadeite sale, rubies have a timeless allure that when worn, can make the wearer feel as beautiful and elegant as the jewels themselves. That might be reason enough.

Stemming from a rich history, the origin of head ornaments dates to the ancient Greece and Rome, and were worn on heads of sacred statues, victorious athletes, and warriors. Symbolizing royalty, sophistication and poise, tiaras were worn by the most powerful women in history. In the recent resurgence of elaborate head ornamentation, tiaras took the center stage of various high-profile exhibitions and celebrity weddings. Some might think that there are limited occasions on when a tiara can be worn, but many tiaras made from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were convertible into necklaces brooches, pendants, and aigrette. Presented in Lot 532 exemplifies of this exquisite craftmanship. This elegantly crafted diamond necklace is perfect for an evening dinner, and beautifully converts into a tiara for those extraordinary moments. — Dominique Lau, Associate Specialist
