KYŌBAI: THE JAPAN EDIT

A Japan-themed cross-category live auction in Hong Kong this December.

Phillips is pleased to announce KYŌBAI: The Japan Edit, a cross-category auction dedicated to the very best of Japanese creativity and craftsmanship. Bringing together Japanese Modern & Contemporary Art, Design, Editions, Photography, Ceramics, Jewels, and Watches, the sale celebrates the breadth and richness of Japan’s artistic and cultural legacy through exceptional works by some of its most influential artists, designers, photographers, and watchmakers. KYŌBAI (競売, meaning “auction” in Japanese) debuted in Phillips London in 2008 to great success and now returns with a renewed vision, presenting a dynamic and contemporary exploration of Japan’s enduring impact on the worlds of art, design, and luxury.

Japan is renowned for its commitment to artistic excellence, innovative design, and an unwavering pursuit of quality. From the postwar avant-garde to the leading creative voices of today, Japanese artists and makers have continually shaped global visual culture and collecting trends. Equally influential is the country's sophisticated collector base, whose emphasis on scholarship, connoisseurship, and craftsmanship has made Japan one of the world's most important art and luxury markets.

Kimberley Wong, Head of Sale, Modern & Contemporary Art, Phillips Hong Kong, said: “Phillips’ success in this category reflects both the strength of the market and the global appeal of Japanese creativity. We have achieved landmark results for Japanese artists, including the auction record for Yayoi Kusama, the second-highest price achieved for Yoshitomo Nara, and the strong performance of our TOKI watch auction, which helped bring many independent Japanese watchmakers to the attention of collectors worldwide. Building on this momentum, we are delighted to launch KYŌBAI as a cross-category platform that highlights Japan’s extraordinary influence across art, design, luxury, and collecting culture. We look forward to welcoming collectors from around the world to participate in this special auction and discover exceptional works that showcase the very best of Japanese artistry and innovation.”

Taking place on 4 December 2026 in Hong Kong, KYŌBAI: The Japan Edit will feature works by leading Japanese artists across generations, alongside creations by independent watchmakers, as well as celebrated jewellery houses and designers. Spanning diverse collecting categories, the auction highlights Japan's enduring impact on global culture through exceptional artistry, innovation, and craftsmanship.
