Launched to mark the centenary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona “Le Mans” arrived as one of the most unexpected and closely watched releases of Watches and Wonders 2023.
Its debut reference (Ref. 126529LN), produced in 18k white gold, immediately captured collector attention, not only for its historical framing, but for what it represented within the modern Daytona lineage. Production proved fleeting. By early 2024, the white-gold model had been quietly discontinued.
Later that same year, Rolex introduced a successor cased in 18k yellow gold, the Ref. 126528LN. The watch was never added to official catalogues and never appeared on the brand’s website, reinforcing its position as an off-catalogue, collector-facing release.
In design, the watch carefully balances heritage and modernity. The dial draws clear inspiration from the legendary exotic “Paul Newman” Daytonas of the 1960s, '70s, and '80s, while replacing the traditional 12-hour totalizer with a 24-hour counter, a functional reference to the Le Mans race itself. The 40mm case belonged firmly to the latest Daytona generation, complete with a black Cerachrom tachymeter bezel punctuated by a red “100” to commemorate the race’s centennial.
The yellow-gold version carries forward the defining traits of the original white-gold Le Mans Daytona while presenting them with greater visual impact. The warm tone of the case amplifies the retro dial elements and red bezel accent, giving the watch a bolder, more extroverted character.
Just as significant is what is visible on the reverse. The sapphire display caseback, previously seen exclusively on the platinum Daytona, offers an unobstructed view of the self-winding calibre 4132 with its solid-gold rotor and neatly finished bridges adorned with Geneva stripes.
While Rolex has long prioritized robustness and reliability over overt decoration and finissage, the calibre 4132 was clearly designed to be seen. This detail alone places the Le Mans Daytona apart from the broader Daytona production range and signals Rolex’s willingness to selectively relax its traditionally closed-back approach.
Production of the yellow-gold Le Mans Daytona appears to have been similarly brief to its white-gold predecessor.
By the beginning of 2025, it was reportedly discontinued, making way for the Ref. 126525LN, an 18k Everose (18k pink gold) Le Mans variant, further reinforcing the short-lived nature of these ultra-special editions.
The Daytona Le Mans reflects Rolex leaning into its history with unusual precision, pairing narrative depth with tangible mechanical differentiation.
The present example, dating to 2024, is available through the Phillips Perpetual boutique in Hong Kong for HKD $1,750,000. It is accompanied by its International Guarantee Card, hangtags, user manuals, presentation box, and outer packaging.
