Coloured Diamonds

Lot 579, Fancy Intense Blue Diamond Ring
Estimate: HK$9,500,000–12,500,000 / US$ 1,220,000–1,600,000
The Hong Kong Jewels Auction, 5 October

Blue diamonds are a rare find in nature. Once encountered, coloured diamonds move to the workshops of skilled artisans who can spend months in careful study before a window is polished. It can take more than a year of final cutting and polishing to achieve the ultimate faceted gem.

The round brilliant-cut is among the rarest of cutting styles for coloured diamonds, as coloured diamond roughs are extremely valuable and it is crucial to maximize weight yield and to intensify their colour. In the case of this round brilliant-cut blue diamond, the cutters found a unique opportunity to demonstrate their virtuosity.

Accompanied by GIA report no. 2193503399, stating that the diamond weighing 1.63 carats is Fancy Intense Blue, Natural Colour, VS1 Clarity.

To discover a single round brilliant-cut Fancy Intense Yellow diamond weighing close to 10 carats is remarkably rare. To gather two — as in this elegant pair of ear pendants with matching colour grade, clarity, size, face-up brilliance, and fire — is simply a miracle.

At first glance, it’s understatedly elegant. Upon closer look, it’s remarkably breathtaking.

Discover the 37 graduated oval and cushion-shaped rubies that are suspended from a single line of brilliant-cut diamonds and decorated by motifs set with brilliant-cut and pear-shaped diamonds in this astonishing necklace.

A powerful symbol of the sun, ruby is believed to contain the bloodline of humanity. Its glowing radiance suggests an inextinguishable flame within the stone that cannot be hidden.

Accompanied by SSEF report no. 97153, stating that the thirty-seven rubies are of Burmese origin, with no indications of heating.

Lot 552, Ruby and Diamond Ring
Estimate: HK$ 2,500,000–3,500,000 / US$ 320,000–450,000
The Hong Kong Jewels Auction, 5 October

Burma is yielding fewer and fewer rubies in recent decades. Stones of such significant size, such as the ruby presented here to form the center of a flowerhead, are even more scarce. Any exceptional unheated specimens have commanded unfathomable per-carat prices at international auctions in the past five years, only surpassed by coloured diamonds.

Accompanied by SSEF report no. 95591, stating that the ruby is of Burmese origin, with no indications of heating; together with a gemmological report.
