“So strong is the demand for rare prints and multiples that this year we took the step in adding three additional live sales to our international calendar. The result was the most successful year in our department’s fourteen-year history and an increase of nearly 30% from 2021 totaling a fantastic $40 million. Our enthusiastic community of collectors participating across the globe has grown tremendously since we founded the Editions department in 2008, resulting in a staggering 405% increase in registered bidders. We have seen extraordinary increases in all areas of the print and multiples market, a testament to the continued importance of the category. In this sale, we saw demand across the board as works by Andy Warhol and Marc Chagall figured prominently in the top ten, with Warhol’s Ten Portraits of Jews of The Twentieth Century (F. & S. 226-235) leading the sale. We were pleased to set 46 world records across our evening and day sale sessions for Alex Katz, Pablo Picasso, Joan Mitchell, Glenn Ligon, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Frank Stella, Robert Longo amongst others. Works by Alexander Calder, Josef Albers, Alice Neel, Cy Twombly, David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein and Ed Ruscha also continue to be quite popular.”
