  • Catalogue Essay

In 1969 Seth Siegelaub and the Dwan Gallery began an edition of 36 sets of Carl Andre's Seven Books. These volumes were intended to be signed and numbered 1-36, however, not all of volumes were actually produced, signed or numbered. Several complete sets were sold to individuals and institutions; others were split up with individual pages or single volumes being distributed by the artist. About ten years later a few more copies were printed from the original “master” set. These “second” copies were intended to make up complete sets in combination with the remaining first copies. In 1996 an effort was initiated to create complete sets from the materials remaining from the original edition of 36. This yielded 12 sets of Seven Books, lettered A-L. These completed volumes were bound, signed and lettered by the artist.
