With a synonymous style of the 1980s, the present Gerald Genta “Royama” pocket watch might just be the perfect example which reflects the style of its era. Encased in a yellow gold and mother of pearl embossed octagonal-shaped case, the present pocket watch draws immediate attention of collectors of fine timepieces. Mostly referred as the genius who designed the Royal Oak and the Nautilus, many may not be aware that Gerald Genta is much more than that. Having established his career in the watch industry in the early 1950’s, his first design was the Universal Genève SAS Polerouter which was introduced to commemorate the historic flight from Copenhagen to Los Angeles via the North Pole in 1954. In 1972, the famous Audemars Piguet Royal Oak was launched making it one of the largest milestones of Genta’s career and a new era to horology.
The present example presented in excellent overall condition strongly portrays Genta’s iconic design and aura through its octagonal-shaped case with heavy resemblance to the Royal Oak. With a skeletonized dial layout, one is able to witness the mechanical artistry which is proudly displayed through three subsidiary dials to determine the date, day, month and leap year as well as a delicate lapis lazuli moon phase positioned at 12 O’clock. Unusual and rarely seen in public, the present example is most definitely a collectible manufactured by one of the most celebrated designer of timepieces of our time.
