Fascinated by tourbillon watches, Journe aimed to transpose Abraham-Louis Breguet’s invention into a wristwatch while enhancing it with a remontoire system—a constant force device that ensures a consistent energy supply, regardless of the winding level of the mainspring. The first prototype was completed in 1991, garnering little fanfare from the industry at the time. The narrative took a remarkable turn in November 2024 when Phillips auctioned his first sold wristwatch, which became the most expensive timepiece made by an independent watchmaker, achieving an astounding CHF 7.32 million.

As exceptional as the first generation of Souscription Tourbillon Souverains, the early collection, fitted with brass movements can be categorized into four distinct generations, each with unique nuances and limited production runs:

1st Generation - Souscription (1999) 20 examples in platinum
2nd Generation (1999) estimated run of 17 examples in platinum
3rd Generation (1999-2001) estimated run of 60 examples in platinum and pink gold
4th Generation (2001-2003) estimated run of 320 examples in platinum and pink gold (present lot)

The present example, engraved No. 246-03T, hails from the fourth generation of Journe’s Tourbillon Souverain with brass movements. Measuring 38mm in diameter, these fourth-generation pieces were produced between 2001 and 2003, with a total of approximately 320 examples crafted. Available only in platinum and pink gold, these timepieces typically featured dial plates in the most common yellow gold, white gold like the present example, and pink gold being the rarest variation. Distinctive features include a flat remontoir balance cock and smaller dial screws compared to the third generation, as well as deeper engravings on the caseback and an upgrade from flathead screws to three-notched holt head screws.

Preserved in stunning condition, the white gold dial beautifully complements the coolness of the white metal case, which to the best of our knowledge, remains unpolished. The dial has developed a delightful patina through natural aging, lending a unique character to the watch for its next owner to explore. Accompanied by its original warranty card from Singapore and a period-correct presentation box, this rare specimen is still in immaculate condition and presents a not-to-be-missed opportunity to acquire one of the finest creations by François-Paul Journe.

F.P. Journe

Swiss | 1999
Founded by watchmaker François-Paul Journe in 1999, the F.P. Journe brand is relatively young, but already is as highly regarded by collectors as many distinguished manufacturers with centuries-old heritage. In the minds of the world's savviest collectors, Journe is producing some of the finest wristwatches the market has ever seen. Mastering his craft from restoring historical timepieces, he was the first to create a wristwatch incorporating two escapements that benefit from the phenomenon of resonance — the Chronomètre à Résonance.

Key models include the Résonance, tourbillon wristwatches incorporating a remontoir and the limited edition Vagabondage series. Especially sought-after are his earliest "souscription" watches, made in 1999.
