Shot by Vasantha Yogananthan in Chitrakoot, Uttar Pradesh, India, this photograph is from the acclaimed series A Myth of Two Souls. Inspired by the Ramayana, an epic poem from Hindu mythology, this body of work chronicles seven years of travel around India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Drawing inspiration from the imagery associated with the Ramayana and its pervasiveness in everyday Indian life, the seven-book project, A Myth of Two Souls, mixes daily life with staged pictures, combining a wide range of techniques, including hand-painted photography and collages.

French photographer Vasantha Yogananthan (b.1985) is the winner of several awards, notably the ICP Infinity Award as Emerging Photographer of the Year in 2017, Prix Camera Clara, one of 20 Foam Talents and Rencontres d’Arles Photo Text Book Award. He is the 2019 Laureate of Immersion by the Fondation d’entreprise Hermes and has a forthcoming show at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson (2023). His work is in the collection of the V&A in London, Foam in Amsterdam and the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne, to name a few.
