Urwerk never fails to captivate the attention of collectors through their bold, futuristic and innovative timepieces. The stainless steel sports watch has taken on the center stage in recent times with manufacturers racing to create their very own iconic example. This was exactly the case of the UR-100 V Iron featuring a stainless steel and titanium case executed with various methods of finishing while introducing the firm’s newly updated self-winding cal. 12.02.
Released recently in 2020, the UR-100 V derives from the regular UR-100 with a manually-wound movement. While collectors of Urwerk may immediately notice the slimness of the case, the firm’s signature orbital satellite time display is proudly featured as the centerpiece. Protected under a domed sapphire crystal, it allows the wearer to admire the sophisticated movement architecture from all angles. While the case is executed with a variety of finishing and material, the movement does not lack any excitement. The Geneva crosses suspending each of the rotating satellite hour disks are made from a beryllium-bronze alloy, while the carousel that rotates each disk is made in shot-peened aluminum. The circular brushed disks themselves, along with the baseplates, are made from an advanced antimagnetic ARCAP alloy. Not only indicating the time through its satellite hours and retrograde minutes, an additional two indications are featured on both sides of the dial indicating distance travelled on earth and distance travelled by earth. Turning the watch on its back, an unusual self-winding mechanism referred as the Windfänger winding rotor is displayed through the sapphire caseback, incorporating a miniaturized air screw that minimizes stress on the rotor while enhancing efficiency and robustness.
Regarded as one of the more wearable Urwerk timepieces, the UR-100 V has been well-received by collectors as it features a refreshed aesthetical appeal while retaining the signature traits of Urwerk. The present fresh-to-the-market example is also the first UR100V Iron that is offered at a PHILLIPS auction and offered in excellent “like new” overall condition with no signs of use and wear and complete with its full set of accessories.
The Swiss firm's name "Urwerk" is a play on the German word meaning clockwork. "Ur" is an ancient Sumerian city in which the populace used sundials for timekeeping, while "werk" is German for creation. The company started by Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei is known for their innovative avant-garde designs inspired by space travel. With their own take on time indication, like many of their contemporaries, their futuristic timepieces are rooted in high-end traditional watchmaking. Their signature floating method of time indication using rotating satellites traces back to a watch made in 1656. Producing only 150 watches per year, they have impressed connoisseurs with their innovativeness and cutting-edge technical prowess.
