Having worked as artist, curator and gallerist, Martin Kippenberger developed an oeuvre that sought to deconstruct and criticise the art market. The multifaceted nature of both his unique works and editions commented upon what he saw as the trivialisation of art through overproduction. Kippenberger’s multiples are highly regarded for their representation of the artist’s thematic exploration of communication, medium and artistic originality. The present work is exemplary of this – a clear demonstration of his propensity towards critical humour and irony.
Kippenberger is well-known for his prolific artistic output; paintings, sculpture, photography, drawings, writing and installations. With a career spanning only two decades, his work had a profound impact upon the development of art during the 80s and 90s. In the wake of the Abstract
Expressionist and Pop movements, Kippenberger believed that it was hard for an artist to be truly original. The seismic nature of his work, in both quantity and medium, demonstrate a continual engagement with his own critical reasoning.
