  • Catalogue Essay

In the present lot, Rosenquist’s extraordinary style of painting takes on elements of collage and transitions smoothly from the hyper-real to the highly abstract. He uses fragmented imagery while playing with variations in scale by altering spatial relationships. The particular use of imagery is indicative of a later technique used by Rosenquist where the concept of the collage is less identifiable and takes on more prominent themes of abstraction. This style becomes apparent when compared to some of his earlier works completed within the realm of the Pop art movement. In the present work however, he maintains the use of bold colors that swirl together within the image, a peerless technique found throughout his later paintings. In its entirety, the elements in Untitled III combine together to produce a powerful composition that toy with the notion of perception and challenge the eye to take it all in at once.
