  • Catalogue Essay

Since its establishment in the mid-19th century by founder F.A. Jones, IWC has witnessed and captivated the most important eras of horology, as well as sustaining throughout the first and second world wars. Still standing strong today, IWC was most notable for the introduction of their pilot’s timepieces modeled as the Big Pilot. However, IWC also has a long history of manufacturing complicated timepieces.

With a movement inspired from their old pocket watch calibers, the Portugieser Tourbillon Handfaufzug is powered by the cal. 98900 inspired from the legendary cal. 98 developed during the 1930’s. Paying homage to its founder, the firm launched the timepiece in 2010 as a limited edition of 50 pieces in 18K yellow gold and 500 pieces in 18K pink gold. Encased in a 43mm diameter case, the matte black dial features applied Arabic numerals in the respective gold with a tourbillon carriage positioned to 9 O’clock, small seconds at 6 O’clock and F.A. Jones’ signature at 3 O’clock.

The present example encased in pink gold numbered 437/500 is offered in attractive overall condition and is further charmed by the full set of accessories including the original numbered fitted presentation box.
