Born in 1970, Gatot Pujiarto currently lives and works in Malang, Indonesia. His thought-provoking works probe abnormalities, weirdness, and tragedy. Pujiarto’s artistic inspiration is rooted from occurrences in his everyday life, including anecdotes told by friends and happenings via social media.
In Dirty Mind / Otak Porno, Pujiarto attempts to addresses the negative aspects of technological advancement in our current society, in particular pornography. It goes without mentioning that the prevalence and accessibility to pornographic websites has caused detrimental side effects – creating a societal addiction and dependency for young individuals and students. Taking centre stage is a screaming headless figure – this brings to mind one’s uncontrollable impulses and ‘dirty’ thoughts.
Pujiarto’s works are a true visual sensation. To achieve his layered and gestural output, the artist incorporates a combination of unique textures by pasting, patching, tearing, binding, and making fabric patterns. Pujiarto’s most notable exhibitions include: ‘Shout – Indonesian Contemporary Art’, Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Roma (MACRO), and ‘Jatim Art Now’ at the National Gallery of Indonesia.
