Chintan Upadyay mixes elements of traditional Indian miniature painting – culled from his experiences growing up in Rajasthanμ – with hi-tech contemporary computer programming tools such as Photoshop™ and Poser™ in creating his canvases. In the series which includes the present lot, Upadyay explores current developments in cloning and mass consumerism focusing on the iconography of the human baby. The artist coats his highly stylized and graphic figures with imagery from tradition Rajasthani paintings and often infuses his subjects with an otherworldly and even sinister quality.
