Attiya Shaukat studied the complex art of traditional miniature painting at the elite National College of Arts, in Lahore, Pakistan.  Taking her technique and use of color and materials from this traditional and fastidious art, Shaukat ironically appropriates the style to depict contemporary and intensely personal subject matter.  Her works are largely informed by a tragic accident which left her lower body paralyzed and she uses fragmented compositions to further highlight the disjointed and traumatic effects of the injury.
