Prototile is Amanda Levete’s answer to the Size + Matter project’s challenge to utilize and exploit a certain material to the maximum affect. For this she chose Corian® tiles manufactured within constrains for thermoforming, and then assembled in such a way as to connect, form and shape them into a multi-functional structure. Levete stresses that “Prototile” is not an art piece but a structure with many possible functions, particularly shade and shelter. Due to Corian®’s inherently translucent nature, “Prototile” produces ever-changing effects as the light and surroundings change.

Amanda Levete says of her collaboration with Corian®: “My designs express themselves through complex geometry and organic form. In Corian®, I have found the perfect material with which to realize this. I have been inspired by the Size Matter project to push Corian® beyond established parameters and expectations. It is unique as a material which can be worked with woodworking tools but also heated and thermoformed to create organic flowing and folded shapes. As a product, it is most commonly associated with interior applications such as sinks and worktops; however this project has inspired us to explore its undeveloped structural potential.”
