Describing the idea behind the ‘Liane’ ceiling lights, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec explained the design was intended to incorporate and unify each element of the interconnected lights: the shades, cables and ceiling plates are covered entirely in industrial black or natural-coloured leather. The material’s adherence and the use of topstitching along the suspended electrical cables creates a natural friction that allows the user to orientate the shades without additional fixtures. Recalling the natural formation of a plant, the design can be configured to respond to a specific space. The present set of two ‘Liane’ ceiling lights are part of a limited edition the brothers presented at Galerie kreo, Paris in autumn 2009, which sold out before the exhibition opened. Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec's practice successfully encompasses both craft and industrial scale design as demonstrated by the present ceiling lights, which they subsequently developed in aluminium for industrial production for the Italian lighting manufacturer Flos.
