This unique timepiece created for Only Watch 2015 features a Pegasus which is a universal symbol of wisdom and knowledge, celebrating Vulcain’s time-honored watchmaking expertise.
Pegasus is one of the most renowned mythological creatures in Greek mythology, often depicted as a pure white winged stallion. Greco-Roman poets chronicled his ascent to heaven after birth and his loyalty to Zeus, the king of the gods. He was captured by the Greek hero Bellerophon near the Perene fountain with the assistance of Athena and Poseidon. Pegasus enabled Bellerophon to ride him in defeating the monster Chimera, going on to assist in many other heroic feats. For his faithful service to Zeus, he was transformed into the constellation Pegasus and placed among the stars.
The symbolism of Pegasus has evolved over the centuries. From the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, he became an emblem of wisdom and fame, later representing poetry and serving as a source of inspiration for poets, particularly in the 19th century.
The present watch showcases one of the most celebrated techniques in dial making: cloisonné enamel. With the Pegasus’ wings proudly spread, the dial exemplifies Vulcain's expertise, beautifully highlighting the significance and artistry of this technique in Haute Horology.
