It is a distinct privilege to present a timepiece by Kari Voutilainen, widely regarded as one of the foremost independent watchmakers of our time, an artisan whose creations embody an exceptional balance of technical mastery, aesthetic refinement, and artisanal integrity.

The anticipation is elevated to an entirely different level with the present watch, the Masterpiece Chronograph numbered 1 of a limited series of just 10 pieces made for a California-based collector's group and adding a crown-adjusted oversized date display and moonphase. Phillips had the pleasure of offering the prototype of the Masterpiece Chronograph in November 2023, and this marks the second appearance of a chronograph by Kari Voutilainen at auction. As number 1 of 10, it occupies a position of singular importance.

The movement is entirely conceived and executed in house, showcasing an arresting architecture defined by gold plated frosted plates and bridges, juxtaposed with impeccably polished and sharply angled steel components. Every surface is treated with the utmost care, reflecting Voutilainen’s uncompromising pursuit of both visual harmony and mechanical excellence. Signature Voutilainen elements are incorporated to the dial and case, including exquisitely hand guilloché subdials, elegantly openworked hands, and beautifully sculpted teardrop lugs.

The present example exhibits subtle distinctions from later examples, including differences in the back plates and keyless works, as well as nuanced variations in the dial, underscoring its early and highly important place in the development of the model.

Consigned by the family of the original owner, and accompanied by an exceptional presentation box crafted in wood and metal, itself a work of art, the box further enhances its desirability for the discerning collector.
