At Rolex, 1970 marked the launch of two Cosmograph references. The reference 6262 debuted with a metal bezel, while the 6264 featured an acrylic bezel. Both models were equipped with the upgraded caliber 727. Interestingly, the new references were introduced while spare parts for the previous model were still available, which is why some early examples, like this one, have a caseback inscribed with the earlier reference 6239. Both references were produced for only a few years and were the last Daytona models to feature pump pushers before screw-pusher references (6263 and 6265) gained popularity.

Consequently, the reference 6262 is considered a rare transitional model, combining pump pushers with the new caliber 727, and boasts one of the shortest production runs in Daytona history.

What makes this watch even more intriguing is its provenance. Originally sold by Sam S. Yampell Inc. in the U.S., the watch has remained within the owner’s family and passed down to his daughters. Recently, they returned it to the retailer’s son, who is still in the business, seeking a new owner who would cherish it as their father did.

Finding a watch in such condition with a complete provenance is extremely rare. It comes complete with all the accessories from when the original owner purchased it in 1972. The original invoice indicates that he even received a discount, reducing the price from USD280 to USD235.20, including tax. The original guarantee further confirms this date, solidifying the watch's provenance.

This example not only embodies historical significance and rarity but also features an incredibly well-preserved white Paul Newman dial. The luminous dots have aged to a charming buttery hue, and the surface remains in excellent condition, making it a very attractive example. Additionally, it is fitted with a rare Rolex U.S.A. bracelet, validated by the “C&I” bracelet maker signature on the clasp, matching the production date of 1971. The case number is further hand-engraved on the inside of the clasp, confirming the bracelet's originality to this watch.

An undoubtedly important heirloom piece with complete provenance, it is a super rare find that includes all the original accessories and a compelling story.

Rolex

Swiss | 1905
Founded in 1905 England by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis as Wilsdorf & Davis, it soon became known as the Rolex Watch Company in 1915, moving its headquarters to Geneva in 1919. Like no other company, the success of the wristwatch can be attributed to many of Rolex's innovations that made them one of the most respected and well-known of all luxury brands. These innovations include their famous "Oyster" case — the world's first water resistant and dustproof watch case, invented in 1926 — and their "Perpetual" — the first reliable self-winding movement for wristwatches launched in 1933. They would form the foundation for Rolex's Datejust and Day-Date, respectively introduced in 1945 and 1956, but also importantly for their sports watches, such as the Explorer, Submariner and GMT-Master launched in the mid-1950s.One of its most famous models is the Cosmograph Daytona. Launched in 1963, these chronographs are without any doubt amongst the most iconic and coveted of all collectible wristwatches. Other key collectible models include their most complicated vintage watches, including references 8171 and 6062 with triple calendar and moon phase, "Jean Claude Killy" triple date chronograph models and the Submariner, including early "big-crown" models and military-issued variants.
