Peter Hujar’s definitive portrait of David Wojnarowicz captures, in the subject’s direct gaze, the multidisciplinary artist’s unique combination of intelligent ferocity and sang-froid. This print was originally given by Hujar to photographer Fred W. McDarrah. McDarrah knew Hujar from the downtown New York scene which both photographers documented, each in their own way. McDarrah was the staff photographer at The Village Voice, later becoming the paper’s photo editor. His photographs of the Beat Generation and the genesis of the Gay Pride movement, and his images of luminaries Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Andy Warhol, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Susan Sontag, among many others, constitute an enduring cultural portrait of the city.
