Introduced in 1985, in the wake of the quartz crisis, the Patek Philippe ref. 3940 represented a bold new departure for the maison. With its slender 36mm circular case, the model stood apart from the brand’s traditional designs, offering a watch that was both modern and strikingly elegant on the wrist.
The present example is distinguished by an exceptionally rare and captivating black lacquered dial, confirmed by its Certificate of Origin. Featuring oversized Roman numerals, crisp white obelisk hands, a crosshair leap‑year indicator, sunken subsidiary dials, and a nuanced two‑tone 24‑hour indicator, the overall effect is at once stealthy, legible, and enchanting.
At its heart beats the ultra‑thin cal. 240Q, Patek Philippe’s first self‑winding perpetual calendar movement with a micro‑rotor. Renowned for combining slenderness, versatility, and lightness with remarkable reliability and a 48‑hour power reserve, it remains one of the manufacture’s most celebrated calibers.
Preserved in excellent overall condition, the watch retains crisp hallmarks and strong case proportions. Complete with its Certificate of Origin and presentation box, this platinum ref. 3940—produced alongside the second and third series—offers collectors a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most captivating interpretations of this landmark reference.
