Extra flat with a stripped down minimalistic contour, the Patek Philippe ref. 3588 was introduced in 1970 with an estimated production timeframe for about 10 years. These understated two-piece cases with pleasing facets were crafted by one of Patek Philippe’s favourite casemaker, Wenger whom stands on the pedestal known for their cases for the ref. 2499 perpetual calendar chronographs.
It is also the first reference to bear the LeCoultre cased calibre cal. 28-225, the flattest self-winding movement of its time. Produced in yellow gold or white gold, they were fitted with various dials, bezels, as well as integrated bracelets.
These rare Calatravas and Ellipse bearing the Iraqi Eagle coat of arms and their ruler’s signature were given by the regime’s highest ranking members as gifts. Boasting a well-preserved case with razor sharp edges and crisp hallmark on the caseback, according to our research approximately 44 examples of a ref. 3558 in white gold have surfaced in the market, and to the best of our knowledge, so far only this example bears the Iraqi Emblem and signature making it exceptionally rare. Furthermore, an Extract from the Archives confirms it date of manufacture in 1974 and later sold in 1981.
