Ref. 1480 was introduced in 1940 and remained in production until at least 1949, crafted in 18K yellow or pink gold, as seen in the present example. It is distinguished by its thick, flat crystal and modern post-Art Deco design, characterized by overhanging edges and prominent lugs. Collectors often refer to it as the “twin lugs” model due to the distinctive dual-lug structure. Between the 1930s and 1950s, Patek Philippe produced a wide array of rectangular-cased watches. These were fitted with either round movements or, more notably—as in the present example—the exquisite rectangular "tonneau" calibre 9’’’90, which remained in use until the 1960s.

The case of this watch, marked with key number 5 on the caseback, was made by Geneva master casemaker Georges Croisier. The two-toned dial, likely crafted by Stern Frères, features an engraved-enamelled signature along with a small seconds. While the center dial is in pink champagne, the outer dial and small seconds subdial are more copperish.

Dating to 1943, this early piece retains the elongated signature on the dial, a detail that was shortened in later models from 1948 onward. Remarkably well-preserved despite its 82-year age, this timepiece is offered with its Extract from the Archives and remains in excellent overall condition.

Other famous models include perpetual calendars such as the ref. 1526, ref. 3448 and 3450, chronographs such as the reference 130, 530 and 1463, as well as reference 1436 and 1563 split seconds chronographs. Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
