The present Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch ref. 3590.50 exemplifies the enduring allure of an icon, produced from 1988-1996 as a continuation of the revered ref. 145.022. As a late production model, signature features help date it, like the upgraded 18-jewel cal. 861 movement and tachymeter bezel with dot below 70. Furthermore, this watch comes with a long Velcro strap, intended to be strapped on the outside of a space suit. With the ease of operating in mind, as astronauts are in thick spacesuits and gloves, the crown cleverly becomes a pusher to adjust functions. An 80dB alarm ensured perceptibility even in noisy spacecraft environments. The "dancing hands" low battery indicator elegantly signaled when power was running low.
