- Creating a clock that resembles a robot requires true creative genius, and MB&F is among the few modern brands willing to push the boundaries of traditional watchmaking to produce a kinetic sculptural piece that is both whimsical and functional. Introduced at SIHH in 2016, Sherman was the result of a collaboration between MB&F and partner L’Epée.
- The structure of Sherman incorporates watch parts, with movement plates and bridges forming its skeleton and body. The 8-day mainspring barrel extends downward, supporting rubber-clad caterpillar tracks, while the domed glass head reveals the mechanical brain, represented by the regulator and balance wheel. Although the design is entirely by MB&F, the engineering is executed by L’Epée.
- Maximilian Büsser, the founder of MB&F, draws inspiration from his childhood fascination with the science fiction of the 1960s and 1970s. Sherman embodies the aesthetic of early television portrayals of robots. His flexible, extended arms end in claws and he moves along a rubber track. Produced in four series, there are 200 examples in palladium-plated brass, 200 in gold-plated brass, and 50 of each set adorned with diamonds.
- The present example is in excellent condition and comes with its winding key. While Sherman traditionally tells time without complications, he stands as a modern sculptural piece, merging mechanics and art. The objectives for Sherman were simple: to tell time and bring joy, and in this instance, those goals have been beautifully achieved.
