Kenzo Tange was one of the most significant architects working in the twentieth century in Japan, designing iconic buildings such as the arenas for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the Peace Center in Hiroshima (1949-1956). Tange’s designs influence by the work of Le Corbusier and European modernism, but he also incorporated elements of design from his native Japan. In 1957, he designed the Sumi Memorial Hall, an office building in Aichi, Japan, as well as pieces of furniture for the building, including the present lot.
