In 2012 Ikepod announced at Baselworld their collaborative effort with renowned graffiti artist and designer KAWS. The reconceptualised Horizon model, released at Colette’s in Paris, was a union of haute horlogerie and contemporary art. Marc Newson’s classic pebble-shaped design with seamless integrated bezel references astrophysics’ theoretical “event horizon”, which is the boundary around a black hole from which nothing, even light, can escape. The 44mm diameter automatic watch featured a dial with KAWS iconic “X Eye” motif for the hands, and “Chomper” teeth design for the hour markers. Produced in four versions with red, white and black dials these unique timepieces captured KAWS style in an understated and playful way.

The American born (b. 1974) artist known as KAWS is renowned for his prolific body of work in the arts and design, including paintings, murals, street art, large scale sculptures, and like the present example product design. For over twenty years he has demonstrated an underlying wit, humour and irreverence that draws inspiration from pop culture. His work has a broad appeal giving him a unique position within contemporary culture. As a Disney animator KAWS was influenced by urban artists like Barry McGee, and in the early 1990s he began to develop his own artistic vision with a bright graphic aesthetic, often featuring his “XX” motif, which is now found across his multidisciplinary oeuvre.

Consigned by the original owner, the present Ikepod Horizon by KAWS, no. 33, is in new old stock condition and remains unused. The watch comes complete with its original blank guarantee card and presentation box. It is highlighted by the iconic KAWS “X Eye” and “Chomper” motives, as well as branded “XX” on the Ikepod rubber strap near the clasp. This design collaboration combines the futuristic appeal of Ikepod wristwatches with the whimsy of one of the most recognised contemporary artists today, and creates a work of art that delightfully integrates both form and function.
