William Ilbery (1760-1839) is a celebrated figure in horology, often referred to as the Father of Montre Chinoise caliber. This British watchmaker played a crucial role in developing timepieces for the Chinese market during a time when England was leading the charge in exporting watches to the Far East. Ilbery skillfully collaborated with talented Swiss artisans for movements and stunning enamel work, capitalizing on the thriving trade relations between Britain and China.

During Ilbery's peak years from 1790 to 1830, he engaged with renowned enamelists such as Dupont, Richter, and Lissignol. His watch cases were true works of art, often inspired by classical mythology, Swiss landscapes, and themes like Faith, Hope, and Love—though portraits on these watches are quite rare.

Highlighted is a stunning example from circa 1810: a remarkable 55.8mm Empire-styled watch, stamped with a crowned leopard’s head hallmark and held in private hands for 28 years. This exquisite piece features a double case; the outer enamelled case can be removed to reveal a gold pocket watch with an engraved fusée and chain duplex escapement. The outer caseback is beautifully adorned with a polychrome enamel scene attributed to J. L. Richter, depicting two ladies and two children at play in a garden.

Framed with elegant case embellished with lozenges and florets in black, blue, and red enamel, lending the timepiece an imperial appeal.
