In the early 1990s, Daniel Roth set out to create his own perpetual calendar wristwatch. Roughly at the same time in 1992, legendary watchmaker Philippe Dufour announced his decision to become completely independent and create timepieces under his own name. Residing just down the road from each other at Vallée de Joux, it was inevitable for the two to work together and collaborate.
The two master watchmakers then went on to create the present Daniel Roth Perpetual Calendar. They used the reliable and robust Lemania caliber 8810 as a base, with modifications made by Dufour to fit inside the unusual dimensions of the double-ellipse case. The present example in white gold is a rare example with two apertures for the day and month, implementing a "semi-instantaneous" perpetual calendar, pre-dating the later fully instantaneous design.
The present watch, numbered 28, is an example from early production featuring an original Daniel Roth dial with a grey ruthenium finish and vertical linear guilloché, perfectly encapsulating the graceful and elegant aesthetics which Roth has adopted from his in-depth study of Abraham-Louis Breguet’s work. Offered in excellent overall condition and accompanied by its full set of accessories, the present timepiece will surely appeal to collectors due to its good looks, legibility, rarity and ultimate historical importance.
