Earth Collection. Lot 590: A Pair of Fancy Intense Yellow Diamond Earrings; Lot 591: Graff - A Colored Diamond and Diamond Necklace; Lot 589: A Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond and Diamond Ring.

\n\n

We turn to the ancient Chinese ideology of the five elemental essences of the universe — Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth— and their relationships to each other as the theme for our upcoming Jewels and Jadeite Fall Auction collection.

\n\n

An expansion of the yin-yang theory of balance, the Five Elements and their association with the concept of equilibrium and harmony are fundamental to understanding ourselves and our surroundings. Believed to be at the root of the universe and the reason for all connections and interactions, these Five Elements are the building blocks to multidisciplinary subjects, from martial arts to medicine, in the East.

\n\n

To reinterpret this cosmic philosophy, our expert jewelry specialists extrapolate characteristics in both the literal and figurative sense to find the most befitting representations of each of the Five Elements for this special curation.

\n\n

Metal

\n\n

\n\n

Lot 577: Van Cleef & Arpels - A Diamond 'Alhambra' Bracelet and Pendant Necklace; Lot 578: A Diamond Necklace; Lot 579: An Exceptional Diamond Ring

\n\n

True to its tangible form and characterizing its physical attributes, an exceptional diamond ring symbolizes Metal in the Five Elements collection. Echoing strength, shine, and brilliance, the diamond closely resembles its metallic partner. The reflective quality of Metal is pronounced in the refracted light and luster from the diamond facets, the clean pear shape curvature is suggestive of a sharp bladed sword, while the diamond and platinum represent the inherent solid and sculptural quality of Metal itself.

\n\n

\n\n

Lot 579: An Exceptional Diamond Ring, set with a 12.33 carat, D color, Internally FLawless, Type IIA, pear-shaped diamond.

\n\n

Wood

\n\n

\n\n

Lot 582: An Exceptional and Rare Emerald and Diamond Bracelet; Lot 581: A Jadeite, Emerald and Diamond Ring; Lot 580: Karen Suen - An Ebony Wood and Diamond 'Rose' Ring and Earring Suite

\n\n

Jewelry designer Karen Suen’s inspirational and exquisitely feminine designs are often anchored in nature. Breathing new life into fine jewels, she frequently weaves an unusual material into her craft — in this instance, ebony. Each petal is meticulously carved out and juxtaposed against shimmering diamonds to contrast with the warmth of timber. Wood signifies spring, the season of birth and new beginnings; just like Suen’s ring and earring set, which captures the full bloom of a rose. (Lot 580).

\n\n

\n
Wood is associated with gemstones that are green in color, including emerald and jadeite, which signify growth and flexibility.
\n

\n\n

Water

\n\n

\n\n

Lot 585: A Fine Sapphire and Diamond Ring; Lot 583: A Paraiba Tourmaline and Diamond Pendant Necklace; Lot 584: An Aquamarine and Diamond Brooch/Pendant, Circa 1950

\n\n

As the source of all life, Water is associated with change, emotions, and purification. Capturing the mannerism of Water in Five Elements, is a rare teardrop aquamarine imbued with the blue hues of the ocean which exudes a sense of calmness and serenity. Crowned at the tip of the stone are pear-shaped diamonds that mirror a cluster of icicles — the solid state of Water. When worn, the pendant dances with movement much like Water’s ability to flow. (Lot 584).

\n\n

\n
Water is associated with sapphire, tourmaline and aquamarine. The element that represents a person's wisdom, meaning they are articulate, clever and introspective.
\n

\n\n

Fire

\n\n

\n\n

Lot 588: An Exceptional Ruby and Diamond Ring; Lot 586: A Pair of Rubellite Tourmaline and Diamond Earrings; Lot 587: A Ruby and Diamond Bracelet

\n\n

Rubies and Rubellite Tourmalines hold the same warm, passionate and exciting attributes associated with the fire element. For just over a decade, Mozambique has become a rising star, producing some of the world’s finest rubies. This 8.08 carat unheated, oval-shaped 'Pigeon Blood' ruby flickers under the light with its fiery scintillation evocating the embers of a fire. Surrounded by a halo of diamonds, the intensity of the red in the ruby is further emphasized by the contrasting diamonds.

\n\n

\n\n

Lot 588: An Exceptional 8.08 Carat Mozambique No Heat Ruby and Diamond Ring

\n\n

Earth

\n\n

\n\n

Lot 590: A Pair of Fancy Intense Yellow Diamond and Diamond Earrings; Lot 589: A Fine Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond and Diamond Ring; Lot 591: Graff An Important Colored Diamond and Diamond Necklace

\n\n

The element of harvest — nurturing and abundant — Earth represents balance and ground. Mined from the Earth, yellow and white diamonds join together to create this mesmerizing five-strand necklace. Taking on the tones of sand and soil, the yellow and gold are offset with alternate white diamonds for a striking effect. With over 135 carats of mixed cut diamonds in total, this Graff necklace nods to the plentitude that the Earth element implies. The draping and fluidity of the necklace also reminds us of the curves and contours found in desert dunes, themselves a true testament to the sands of time.

\n\n

Lot 648 (Jewels & Jadeite Hong Kong Fall 2020): Feng J - A Unique Diamond 'Fountain of Diamonds' Ring. Estimate: HK$11,500,000 - 15,500,000.

\n\n

The highly unusual ‘Fountain of Diamonds’ ring illustrates the concept of a spring fountain. The inspiration dates back to Feng J’s time living in Paris when she was infatuated by the hundreds of fountains throughout the city and fascinated by the feminine Belle Époque sculptures and the history they represent. The curvature of the water is shown by 95 circular bubbling diamond beads, expressing the jets of water, all set by hand and culminating at the ring’s focal point where the 22.08 carat, D color, VS1 clarity diamond sits. The sourcing process for every single bead was extensive, with each diamond having to fit a precise size, shape and clarity specification to fully replicate the lively bubbling of a Parisian fountain. The Fountain of Diamonds ring is the essence of contemporary jewelry sculpture, with thoughtful inspirations behind a wearable work of art.

Worn by Charlene: A Sapphire, Diamond and Colored Diamond Ring (Lot 618), Audemars Piguet Diamond Wristwatch (previously acquired at Phillips), diamond ring (Charlene's own).

\n\n

Mum takes the lead when it comes to being on screen. But when it comes to jewels, there is a plot twist. Charlene has grown to become quite the gem expert and is armed with her very own gem kit that she uses to inspect the jewels. As Theresa admits her eyesight isn’t what it used to be, she relies on Charlene who she claims knows her style more than she does herself. True to form, we witness this as Charlene has already eyed a few pieces that she’s selected for the shoot and hints she hopes to win them for her mum at the live auction later this month.

\n\n

“Actually, we are sitting in the exact spot where we usually bid!” Using Jade Land’s lounge space, Theresa delights in hosting gatherings and bringing people together for such events and bids over the phone. Even today, her confidante, Freda Wong is here to support her friend’s photo shoot and take a peek at the Fall auction lots.

\n\n

“Collecting is a hobby of mine. It means so much more when I can share this with my friends and daughter too. We enjoy being together and bidding together,” Theresa remarks as she admires the jewels.

\n\n

Charlene hesitates over the Alexander Laut Colored Sapphire and Diamond Earrings (Lot 517), but instead rests her hand on the 6.52-carat Diamond and Opal Ring (Lot 612). The fire of the diamond paired with the irregular structure of the crystal and pinkish luster is rare to come by. Charlene's excitement can barely be concealed as she shows her mum and they both take turns trying it on.

\n\n

\n
Most people think that fine jewelry has to be traditional. I love this ring because it's elegant yet contemporary. Its simplicity makes it modern, and the use of opal is a fun twist to a minimalistic design. - Charlene Ng
\n

\n\n

Sharing more than just good genes, when asked about what other common interests the two have, Theresa and Charlene answer in unison – our philosophy. Mother and daughter are members of the Soka Gakkai International of Hong Kong and both practice the teachings of the Lotus Sutra. “We apply our Buddhist philosophy in everyday life,” Charlene explains.

\n\n

\n\n

Worn by Theresa: Alexander Laut A Pair of Colored Sapphire and Diamond Earrings (Lot 517), A Diamond and Opal Ring (Lot 612), Rolex Ref. 11659912SA (Lot 828).

\n\n

“To me, that means striving to be the best versions of ourselves.” A strong advocate of this sunny energy that she describes it, Theresa adds “this is what I want to pass on to Charlene. I want the best for her, so it’s hard not to be protective. Over the years, I’ve learned that she’s going to make her own decisions and sometimes we will make mistakes. It is just my hope for her to get back up and learn from them.”

\n\n

“I’ve inherited this attitude from my mum, which I’m so grateful for,” says Charlene. “Mum’s taught me so much – how to be a good person, differentiate right from wrong and to rise above adversities. Now that I’m following in her footsteps, I'm learning how to do business from her too. She's the reason for my strong work ethic. Nothing is a given, and I need to work hard for everything, including my own happiness."

\n\n

Speaking of passing on values, we took the chance to ask about the valuables too. Before us is a sizable collection of mesmerizing pieces, thanks in no small part to Charlene’s sharp eye for impressive jewels.

\n\n

Just as Charlene enjoys picking out things for Mum, Theresa likes to spot younger styles that are appropriate for her daughter. At first glance, the Mikimoto Conch Pearl, Cultured Pearl and Diamond Necklace (Lot 529) didn't make it off the presentation tray but as soon as Charlene tried it on, it quickly became apparent that both mother and daughter agree that the necklace is a winner. "It makes all the difference when you physically wear it," says Charlene. "I like the way it rests perfectly on the neck, just slightly above the collar bone."

\n\n

"It's refreshing to see cultured pearls used in such a stylish way. The pink conch pearl and the diamonds make for a beautiful motif that isn't too over the top for someone of Charlene's age," Theresa adds as she centers it on her daughter's neck. They are reminded that the necklace comes with matching conch pearl and diamond cluster earrings (Lot 530), and it's safe to say that these items have made their way onto their bidding list.

\n\n

\n\n

Worn by Theresa: A Fine Red Spinel and Diamond Ring (Lot 547), Franck Muller watch, ruby and diamond earrings and ruby bracelet (Theresa's own). Worn by Charlene: A Lavender Jadeite and Diamond Ring (Lot 540), Audemars Piguet Diamond, Sapphire and Gold Wristwatch (previously acquired at Phillips), Diamond and pearl earrings (Charlene's own).

\n\n

Of all the fantastical jewels in front of me, I am curious if any piece(s) are dearest to them and why. A no brainer for the soon-to-be-bride, Charlene who proudly presents her engagement ring, “he chose this diamond and even designed the band with a jeweler. I had no idea he was going to propose to me on our trip to El Nido in the Philippines.”

\n\n

“We are all so excited for her. We are currently shopping around for her bridal jewelry and it’s such a fun and memorable moment in our lives,” Theresa adds.

\n\n

For Mum, she’s got a special timepiece in mind. To her, the most important jewels may not be the most expensive. “Actually, that's a Piaget diamond watch that I bought at Phillips a couple of years ago. My friends encouraged me to bid for it and I think they now regret it - now they wish they had bought it for themselves. I was lucky to win it. I love it.”

\n\n

However, the sentimental Theresa tells us the story of her gold Rolex. “When I had my first child, Brian, his father gifted me this watch,” she begins. “It’s irreplaceable because it marks such a lifechanging moment in all our lives.”

\n\n

Taking a cue from her friend who has also previously bought from Phillips, Theresa has collected things for the special moments that are yet to come. "I commemorate special events in our lives with precious jewels and sometimes acquire things that I know will celebrate future landmark occasions. I could see this Sapphire and Diamond Ring (Lot 618) marking something memorable one day," explains Theresa. A fan of statement pieces, Theresa definitely shows off the chunky jewels very well.

\n\n

\n
This 5.61-carat Burmese sapphire is spectacular for its size and clarity considering the certificates show no indications of heating. - Dr. Theresa Fok
\n

\n\n

The apple evidently doesn’t fall far from the tree. Upon closer inspection, a lot of Theresa can be seen in Charlene, their relationship is undeniably strong. Honing her skills as a real estate magnate under her mother’s tutelage, the budding professional has an immense undying appreciation for her mother. “Mum is my boss at work, and I see her every day. She’s also my best friend.”

\n\n

“It’s very special to be able to work with Charlene. I always encourage her to make things her own because that is what will ultimately define her,” says Theresa.

\n\n

Apart from the precious jewels and timepieces, there’s so much more beyond the material things as Charlene attests. “All of the precious things we own are a blessing. I wish to pass them on to my children one day. But, most importantly, I want my mother’s joyous spirit, generous virtue and thoughtfulness for the next generation.”

(Michael S. Krzemnicki)

\n\n

\n\n

MICHAEL KRZEMNICKI (MK):

Lot 643 (Jewels & Jadeite Hong Kong Fall 2020): A Fine Natural Pearl, Emerald and Diamond Necklace. Estimate: HK$2,200,000 - 3,200,000.

\n\n

When it comes to grading precious stones and gems, Dr Michael S. Krzemnicki is the person to know. One of the most recognized published writers and speakers in the world of gems, with over two decades of experience at SSEF – Swiss Gemmological Institute – the world's leading testing laboratory for colored gemstones, diamonds and pearls, and as a lecturer at the University of Basel, Dr Krzemnicki is a highly reputable gem expert.

\n\n

We took a moment to catch up with the expert to learn about pearls – their cultural and historical significance, their increasing scarcity and the value they hold.

\n\n

\n\n

Dr. Michael Krzemnicki, Director of Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF

\n\n

PHILLIPS (P): Pearls have been around for centuries and are highly sought after by collectors today. Can you tell us where their value lies?

\n\n

MICHAEL KRZEMNICKI (MK): Since ancient times, pearls have been revered for their obvious beauty, but also because of they have long been associated with mythical beliefs and powers in cultures from the East to the West. Consequently, pearls are found in important royal collections as well as in recent creations because they continue to fascinate jewelry designers and collectors for their beauty, rarity and the historical context they offer.

\n\n

P: We see many different types of pearls on the market. Can you tell us a little about their differences?

\n\n

MK: The two main types of pearls are natural pearls and cultured pearls. Pearls can be found in freshwater or saltwater molluscs. They differ in the way they are formed and consequently in their internal structures: natural pearls are rare and form accidentally in a wild oyster in the absence of any human interference, whereas cultured pearls are produced in pearl farms and are created by humans inserting a small tissue implant to trigger their formation, and may optionally contain a shell bead inside.

\n\n

\n\n

Lot 539: A Natural Pearl and Diamond Necklace. Estimate: HK$160,000 - 240,000

\n\n

P: Since natural pearls are formed by chance, how rare are they?

\n\n

MK: Natural pearls of fine quality are exceptionally rare, especially when compared to cultured pearls which are produced in pearl farms in rather large quantities. Natural pearls form accidentally, without any human intervention and require specific formation conditions to reach a certain size with very fine luster.

\n\n

P: How would one tell the difference between a natural and cultured pearl?

\n\n

MK: Natural and cultured pearls differ in the way they are formed and consequently in their internal structures. It is usually not possible to distinguish natural pearls from cultured pearls without advanced testing methods. These include x‐ray radiography and microtomography – both absolutely non‐invasive methods to visualize and separate the internal characteristics and structures of pearls.

\n\n

\n\n

Lot 529: Mikimoto - A Conch Pearl, Cultured Pearl and Diamond Necklace. Estimate: HK$250,000 - 350,000

\n\n

P: What are the major challenges facing the pearl market today?

\n\n

MK: Today, the pearl market is mainly dominated by cultured pearls, which face challenges such as overproduction, price instability, and on a global level climate change.
\nThe natural pearl trade is a niche market and is very limited in supply. It’s imperative to raise awareness about the beautiful individuality of natural pearls, their rarity and their historical context, specifically to the next generation of collectors.

\n\n

P: What advice can you share with potential collectors who are looking to buy at auction?

\n\n

MK: In my opinion, by far the most important factor is to choose a pearl based on personal preferences – be it shape, color, luster, the way it is set in jewelry or provenance. It is also vital that any pearl you buy is accompanied by a report from an international reputed gemological laboratory.
