A horological pioneer, Abraham Louis Breguet helped establish so many of the foundations and standards the Swiss watch industry is known for today. A master of technical innovation, he is credited with developing some of watchmaking’s most inspiring complications - from the tourbillon and its gravitational compensation for precision timing, to shock protection and self-winding watches, and the clear tones ringing from gongs used on repeating timepieces. A master watchmaker and businessman, Breguet created “souscription” pocket watches in 1797, which allowed clients to make a down payment on an affordable reliable watch with the balance due upon completion. This helped him to remain financially stable, and during his lifetime, he manufactured some 700 examples in gold or silver cases. His timepieces have a classic appeal sought after by collectors, and the modern brand’s wristwatches continue the tradition of excellence in horology.
Breguet’s Tradition Collection was launched in 2005, and is a 21st century homage to Breguet’s legacy and his “souscription” series. The reference 7067 was introduced in 2012, and is still available in both white and pink gold. The Tradition GMT is a unique representation of the dual-time function found on many tool watches. The wristwatch is classic Breguet with an open-worked dial providing visibility to the movement and in particular the escapement. The caliber 507 DRF celebrates some of the master’s most cherished innovations like the Breguet hairspring with “overcoil” for enhanced precision, as well as the parachute shock absorption system. The reverse displays an elegant power reserve with the movement having approximately 50 hours when fully wound.
A hallmark of Breguet timepieces is the guilloché silvered dial with classic blued steel Breguet hands. The movement is fully visible below, with a day/night indicator at 10 o’clock, and a blackened subsidiary dial indicating the second time zone at 8 o’clock. The 40mm diameter case has extended straight lugs, with a pusher at 10 o’clock for ease of setting the second time zone.
The present model is in excellent condition, and an exemplary example of the essence of Breguet timepieces. Complete with its boxes, original certificate, and accessories, the reference 7067 is a horological work of art by one of the industry’s oldest manufacturers, and a welcome addition to any collection.
Established in 1775 by Abraham Louis Breguet, widely considered the greatest watchmaker of all time, the storied brand continues to thrive in the modern era, creating exceptional high-end watches as the Swatch Group's premier prestige brand. Some of the most important and lasting inventions in watchmaking are attributed to Abraham Louis Breguet, including the tourbillon, shock resistance and the use of hammers and gongs employed in nearly all minute repeating watches made since.
Eighteenth and nineteenth century Breguet pocketwatches are especially sought-after by collectors, and many of them were made for the elite of European society, including Napoléon and Marie Antoinette. Key wristwatches from the twentieth century include oversized dress watches, two-register chronographs, triple calendars and Type XX aviator's chronographs made for the French military and civilians.
