“I want viewers to question: What is painting?” Thilo Heinzmann, 2014

German artist Thilo Heinzmann’s artistic practice is dedicated to the exploration and recalibration of painting as a means of creative expression. In the current lot, the artist disperses powdered pigments in deep blue, brown and green tones across a nearly all-white canvas. A cloud of deep marine dust and three emerald streaks settle to convey a genuine, painterly flourish. The pigment ranges in its impression across the work, covering some areas only lightly, and transforming others with chromatic density.

Though Heinzmann employs his own hand and various tools to scatter the pigment, much of the final result is left to chance. Protected by a Plexiglas cover, the pigments settle into place between glass, space and canvas. The resulting, isolated color spray is economical in its form and transcendent in its impact against an unadorned background. Only through close inspection is it possible to fully take in the minute gradations of pigment that define this piece.

Heizmann’s entire oeuvre is dedicated to exploring painting as a context rich in potential for the interaction of form, color, texture, and surface. Born in 1969, Heinzmann comes from a lineage of gently subversive German neo-formalists. Continuing a long legacy of formal painterly investigations, he arrives at O.T. with an altogether new vision of painting and its possibilities.
