  • Description

In 1956 Malick Sidibé bought his first camera, a Brownie Flash, and in 1957 he became a full-time photographer, opening Studio Malick in 1962 in Bamako, Mali. He rapidly became known for his candid, black and white images of young people dancing and smiling at parties and for capturing the vivacious culture of West Africa. His international recognition was ignited in the 1990s by photographer Francoise Huguier, who worked with curator André Magnin. Magnin had been sent to West Africa by Jean Pigozzi, the famous French art collector. Sidibé quickly gained widespread popularity, becoming the first African and first photographer to win the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2007 Venice Biennale.

The group of three works within the present lot are from Sidibé’s series of small photographs which have been carefully arranged within hand painted frames. The colorful and carefully patterned frames were created by Checkna Touré who has had a shop around the corner from Sidibé since the 1960s. By adding distinctive, ornamental frames around each image these reproducible photographs have been transformed into beautiful, cultural and unique objects.
