For Phillips, 2017 was nothing short of a watershed year. We witnessed groundbreaking new world records across New York, London, Geneva and Hong Kong—among them, Peter Doig's Rosedale became the most expensive work by a living British artist at auction when it fetched $28.8 million last May, while Paul Newman's legendary 'Paul Newman' Rolex Daytona smashed all records for a wristwatch at auction when a spirited bidding battle concluded at $17.8 million.
Outside of the saleroom, however, it was a year defined by thoughtful partnerships with the world's preeminent institutions, a growing team of international specialists and continued expansion into Asia and other key regions.
In our special Year in Review video Ed Dolman, CEO and Cheyenne Westphal, Chairman sit down for an intimate and revealing conversation about what made 2017 such an exciting and pivotal year at Phillips and discuss what's ahead in 2018.
What has been extraordinarily rewarding is the level of collectors we've been working with.
