On 6 June 1944 photographer Robert Capa landed with American forces on Omaha Beach to document the Allied invasion of France. Taken in the heat of battle, under the most hazardous conditions, Capa’s images document one of the 20th-century’s most decisive military maneuvers. It is believed that an error in photographic processing ruined part of the film Capa shot that day; in any case, only eleven frames survive. This image, along with others Capa made on 6 June, was published days after in LIFE magazine’s 19 June 1944 issue under the title: Beachheads of Normandy. The photograph offered here, taken at a low angle and showing the determination of the American forces, is immediate and visceral. Capa’s eleven extant D-Day images have since served as a visual reference point for that decisive day in history.
