In 1996, Swatch served as the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games, held in Atlanta, Georgia. At selected track and cycling events at the Games, timekeepers rang a bronze bell to signal the beginning of the final lap to the athletes and spectators. The present bell was one of a limited number cast for the Atlanta Games at a small Swiss foundry in La Chaux de Fonds. The use of bells to announce the final lap reportedly dates back to the first Olympic Games of the modern era, held in Athens in 1896.
