This piece by the celebrated Italian designer Paolo Pininfarina takes up the ancient competition known today as the discus-throw, still a discipline in contemporary Olympic Games. While the contestants in ancient Greece hurled discs of stone, today’s athletes throw sleek discs made of metal, plastic and wood. Pininfarina’s streamlined transparent resin sculpture, with its embedded wooden discus, combines the harmony and balance of ancient Greek sculpture with the power and sweep of implicit flight.
